A broken day–night cycle
Most organisms evolved with a dependable rhythm of bright days and dark nights, plus the fainter cycles of moonlight, and they use these signals to time daily and seasonal behavior. Artificial light at night overrides that information. Because so many physiological and behavioral processes are keyed to light, adding light where there was darkness has consequences that ripple well beyond simple visibility, reaching sleep, hormones, orientation, and the timing of migration and breeding. Insects drawn to their deaths
Night-flying insects are strongly affected: many are drawn to lights, where they circle, are exhausted, or are picked off by predators, and street and building lighting can act as a nightly trap. Researchers list artificial light among the pressures contributing to insect declines. Since insects underpin food webs as pollinators and prey, losses at lights ripple outward to the birds, bats, and other animals that depend on them, magnifying the effect of a single fixture. [2][3]

Birds and turtles led astray
Light also misdirects animals that navigate by natural cues. Many birds migrate at night and can be disoriented by lit buildings and towers, leading to collisions and wasted energy, which is why 'lights out' programs dim cities during migration. On beaches, sea-turtle hatchlings that instinctively head toward the brightest horizon—naturally the open sea—are drawn inland by artificial light, with often fatal results. Better lighting reverses much of it
Unlike many threats, light pollution is quickly reversible. Guidance from dark-sky and wildlife organizations centers on lighting only what is needed: shield fixtures so light points down, use the lowest useful brightness, choose warmer colors that are less disruptive to wildlife, and use timers or motion sensors so lights are on only when required.
