Copperhead
Agkistrodon contortrixAlso known as Eastern Copperhead, Highland Moccasin, Chunk Head
Copperheads are masters of camouflage that blend seamlessly into the forest floor, relying on their hourglass-shaped bands to mimic fallen leaves. During the hot summer months, they shift from daytime activity to nocturnal hunting, using heat-sensing pits between their eyes and nostrils to locate warm-blooded prey. In autumn, they migrate to communal dens, often sharing winter crevices with timber rattlesnakes and black rat snakes.

- Watch Your Step: Scan leaf litter and rocky crevices carefully, as their camouflage is exceptionally effective.
