Black Rat Snake

Black rat snakes are powerful constrictors capable of scaling vertical tree trunks and barn walls in search of prey. When threatened, they often freeze in a distinctive crinkled, zig-zag posture or vibrate their tails against dry leaves to mimic a rattlesnake. Females lay clutches of up to two dozen eggs in rotting logs or mulch beds during early summer.
