Helmeted chameleons thrive in the cool montane scrublands and agricultural hedges of the East African highlands. Recognized by their prominent, swept-back casque crest and serrated dorsal spines, these diurnal lizards dynamically shift color from mottled greens and browns to striking turquoise during courtship or territorial displays. Unusually for reptiles, females give birth to live young, an adaptation well suited to the chilly high-altitude nights of their native range.
