Crested Porcupine

Crested porcupines are stout, heavily built nocturnal rodents easily recognized by the fan of long, black-and-white quills lining their neck, shoulders, and back. When threatened, they erect their crests, rattle hollow tail quills to generate a loud warning noise, and charge backward or sideways into aggressors. They spend daylight hours resting in deep underground burrows, emerging at dusk to forage across Mediterranean shrublands, savannas, and dry woodlands.
