This impressive bracket fungus grows at the base or on roots of broadleaf trees, particularly oak and beech, where it causes a white butt rot. Young fruiting bodies often exude clear to yellowish resinous droplets along their thick, rounded edges. Over time, the cap develops a dark red-brown, lacquered crust that melts easily when exposed to a flame.
