Southern brackets form dense, woody bracket shelves on living and dead hardwood trees across temperate and tropical regions of the globe. Their dark brown, concentrically ridged caps produce millions of microscopic brown spores from tiny pores on their pale undersides. As powerful wood decayers, they break down tough lignin, recycling vital nutrients back into forest ecosystems.

Responsible observation
- Pore Surface: Look closely at the underside pores with a magnifier to observe annual growth layers.
- Spores: Scratching or disturbing mature brackets releases brown spore dust onto nearby bark.
- Tree Health: Presence on living trunks indicates internal heartwood rot in the host tree.
