California mantids are agile ambush hunters ranging in color from mottled desert brown to vibrant green, blending seamlessly into arid scrub and garden foliage. Their exceptionally mobile heads rotate up to 180 degrees to visually track flies, moths, and crickets before snaring them in milliseconds with spined forelegs. In autumn, mature females secure hardened, foamy egg cases to woody twigs and rocks, ensuring the next generation overwinters safely.
