Three-toed Box Turtle

Terrapene triunguis

Three-toed box turtles wander forest floors across the American South, foraging through damp leaf litter during humid mornings and burrowing into soft soil to escape midday heat. Their hinged plastron allows them to withdraw entirely inside the high-domed carapace, sealing the shell shut against raccoons and coyotes. During cool autumn months, individuals bury themselves beneath several inches of woodland mulch to brumate until spring rains warm the earth.

What to notice
Recognizable by an olive-brown domed shell, orange or yellow facial marks, and typically three toes on each hind foot.
Support conservation
Never remove a turtle from its home territory, and give nesting females ample space to dig undisturbed.
Responsible observation
  • Road Crossing: If safely assisting a turtle off the road, carry it gently across in the direction it was already heading.
  • Leave in Nature: Avoid taking wild turtles home, as individuals possess strong homing instincts and spend their lives in small, established home ranges.
  • Observe Patiently: Watch quietly from several steps back so the turtle feels secure enough to unhinge its shell and resume walking.
