Royal Fern
Osmunda regalisAlso known as Flowering Fern, King Fern, Ditch Fern
Royal ferns form massive, majestic clumps in saturated soils and sun-dappled wetlands across northern temperate regions. Golden, tassel-like fertile pinnae crown the upper portions of mature fronds in early summer, creating the striking illusion of blossoms on a non-flowering plant. Sturdy fibrous rhizomes anchor deep into peat and moss, allowing individual plants to endure for over a century in undisturbed habitats.

Responsible observation
- Spring Observation: Look for rust-colored fertile tips emerging at the center of green fronds in early summer.
- Habitat Care: Stay on boardwalks or dry paths in bogs to avoid damaging fragile peat and subterranean roots.
- Autumn Viewing: Watch for foliage turning a rich bronze or copper hue prior to winter dormancy.
