Rock Squirrel

Otospermophilus variegatus

Rock squirrels are robust, boulder-dwelling ground squirrels that spend their days foraging among rocky outcrops, canyon walls, and talus slopes across the American Southwest and Mexico. Unlike most ground squirrels, they are agile climbers capable of scaling mesquite, juniper, and oak trees to gather mast and fruits before caching them in extensive underground burrows. When alarmed, sentinels post up on high vantage points and project a piercing whistle, alerting kin while keeping wary eyes trained on aerial and terrestrial predators.

  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is moderate
Hosts fleas that can transmit plague; observe from a distance and never feed or handle.
Why it is dangerous
Harbors wild rodent fleas capable of transmitting sylvatic plague (Yersinia pestis) and has powerful incisors that cause painful bites if cornered.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a heavy-bodied ground squirrel with a grizzled grayish-brown to black-mottled coat, white eye-rings, and a bushy, flattened tail.
What to do
Keep at least several meters away, do not attempt to hand-feed, and prevent domestic dogs from investigating burrows.
Responsible observation
  • Watch rock perches: Scan the tops of prominent boulders along canyon trails where individuals like to sunbathe and keep watch.
  • Listen for alarm calls: A single shrill, bird-like whistle followed by chirps often reveals a vigilant adult nearby.
  • Maintain distance: Avoid tempting them with trail snacks to prevent habituation and flea exposure.
