European Mantis
Mantis religiosaAlso known as Praying Mantis, Religious Mantis
European mantises are master ambush predators, blending seamlessly into foliage where they wait motionless for hours with their raptorial front legs folded. They possess a highly flexible neck joint that allows them to rotate their triangular heads 180 degrees to track movement without moving their bodies. During late summer, females lay their eggs in foamy, protective cases called oothecae, which harden to shield the offspring through harsh winter freezes.

- Look for the spot: Identify this species by checking the inside of their front coxae for a black-and-white bullseye spot.
- Handle with care: Let them crawl onto your hand voluntarily rather than grabbing them to avoid a harmless pinch.
