Mammal
Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus
Arctocephalus pusillus doriferusAlso known as Afro-Australian Fur Seal, Cape Fur Seal, Australian Fur Seal, South African Fur Seal
Brown fur seals gather in massive, noisy colonies along wave-battered rocky coastlines and islands across southern Africa and southeastern Australia. Dominant bulls aggressively defend territories and harems throughout the late spring breeding season, vocalizing with deep guttural roars and bark-like calls. Outside the rookeries, these agile marine predators make deep foraging dives over continental shelves to hunt schooling prey.

Interaction riskHigh
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is high
- Large bulls and protective mothers can inflict severe crushing bites if approached too closely on land.
- Why it is dangerous
- Massive bulls weigh several hundred kilograms and can charge aggressively to defend territory, inflicting deep lacerations and severe bacterial infections through crushing bites.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a robust seal with visible external ear flaps, dense brown-gray fur, and large flippers used to walk semi-erect on rocks.
- What to do
- Maintain a generous buffer zone around haul-outs and immediately retreat if an animal sits up, growls, or moves toward you.
Responsible observation
- Colony Distance: Keep at least 30 meters away on foot, as hauled-out seals move surprisingly fast on rocks.
- Boating Speed: Reduce vessel speeds around haul-outs to avoid disrupting resting animals and pups.
- Avoid Blocking Paths: Never position yourself between a seal and the water, which can trigger a defensive charge.
