Eastern racers are active, visual hunters that raise their heads above tall grass to scan for prey before launching forward with remarkable speed. Juveniles feature striking blotched patterns that fade into solid dark shades as they reach adulthood. When cornered, these high-strung reptiles rapidly vibrate their tails against dry leaves, producing a buzzing rattle to ward off threats.
