North American racers are swift, highly active daylight hunters that rely on keen vision to spot prey across open fields, meadows, and forest edges. When threatened, these slender snakes vibrate their tails in dry leaves to mimic rattlesnakes and quickly flee into thick brush at remarkable speeds. Juveniles feature striking blotched patterns that fade into uniform shades of black, blue, green, or tan as they mature.
