Northern Red Muntjac

Muntiacus vaginalis

Also known as Barking Deer, Northern Muntjac

Northern red muntjacs roam dense subtropical and tropical forests across southern and southeastern Asia, slipping through thick underbrush with remarkable agility. Known widely as barking deer, they emit loud, repetitive bark-like vocalizations when alarmed or detecting predators, alerting other forest wildlife. Males possess distinctive elongated upper canines that protrude like small tusks, which they wield alongside short antlers in territorial duels.

Why interaction risk is low
Males carry sharp upper canines and can inflict deep puncture wounds if cornered or handled.
Why it is dangerous
Males possess sharp, elongated canine teeth capable of inflicting serious bite lacerations when defensive.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a small, reddish-brown deer with downward-curving upper tusks visible protruding from the mouth of males.
What to do
Never corner or attempt to capture an injured or trapped individual; contact local wildlife authorities.
Responsible observation
  • Listen carefully: A rhythmic, dog-like barking call echoing through forest canopies often reveals its presence before visual contact.
  • Maintain distance: Observe from trail edges or observation hides to prevent flushing this notoriously shy browser.
