Chinese pennisetum forms dense, arching tussocks crowned by bristly, bottlebrush flower spikes that shimmer in low sunlight. Native to moist meadows, riverbanks, and open slopes across eastern Asia and Australia, it disperses lightweight, wind-blown seed heads across open country. Although valued globally as a hardy ornamental border plant, its vigorous self-seeding allows it to establish quickly in disturbed soils and moist roadside ditches.
