Grisettes emerge in summer and autumn throughout temperate forests, forming vital mycorrhizal partnerships with trees such as birch, oak, and pine. The grey to brownish cap features prominently grooved margins that mirror the underlying white gills, supported by a tall stem that emerges from a loose, sac-like volva. Unlike many members of its genus, this mushroom completely lacks a ring on its stem.
