Common watersnakes are dark, heavy-bodied reptiles frequently seen basking on logs, branches, or rocks along North American waterways. They actively forage in lakes, rivers, and marshes, diving underwater to flush small fish and amphibians into the open. When cornered or handled, they flatten their bodies, release a foul-smelling musk, and bite repeatedly in self-defense.
