Urutu Lancehead
Bothrops alternatusAlso known as Crossed Pit Viper, Yarara Grande, Urutu
Urutu lanceheads are heavy-bodied pit vipers that dominate the marshlands, humid savannas, and agricultural edges of south-central South America. Perfectly camouflaged among dense grasses and leaf litter, they lie stationary for days at a time to ambush passing rodents. When threatened, they vibrate their tails against dry foliage as an audible warning before striking with speed and precision.

- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is very high
- Possesses medically significant hemotoxic venom; keep several meters away and never attempt to handle.
- Why it is dangerous
- Possesses severe hemotoxic, proteolytic, and cytotoxic venom that causes extensive tissue destruction, hemorrhaging, and potential acute kidney injury.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Stocky body featuring bold, alternating dark brown C-shaped markings along the flanks and a pale cross or anchor pattern atop the head.
- What to do
- Freeze immediately upon sighting, back away smoothly without sudden movements, and never probe tall grass or fallen logs with bare hands.
Responsible observation
- Distance Protocol: Maintain a clearance of at least three meters, as cornered vipers strike over half their body length.
- Footwear Safety: Wear heavy leather boots and snake gaiters when walking through brush, pastures, or wetland edges.
- Night Visibility: Carry a strong flashlight after dark to spot coiled snakes resting directly on footpaths.
