Giant Triton Snail

Charonia tritonis

Also known as Triton's Trumpet, Giant Triton, Pacific Triton

Giant triton snails stalk Indo-Pacific reefs using acute chemoreceptors to track the scent of echinoderms across sand flats and coral heads. Upon overtaking prey, the hunter grips victims with a muscular foot, files through calcified defenses using a serrated radula, and injects neutralizing saliva containing sulfuric acid. Their appetite for coral-munching crown-of-thorns sea stars makes them indispensable keystone guardians of fragile tropical barrier reefs.

Why interaction risk is low
Harmless to humans; safe to observe at a respectful distance.
What to notice
Look for a massive, pointed spindle shell patterned with cream, brown, and tan crescents nestled among coral rubble.
Support conservation
Maintain neutral buoyancy to avoid touching the snail or crushing surrounding corals, and report any illegal harvest to local marine authorities.
Responsible observation
  • Diving Etiquette: Admire snails in place on the reef without handling or lifting them from the substrate.
  • Shell Collecting: Never take live snails or empty triton shells, as both are strictly protected in many marine reserves.
