Cloaked in velvety olive greens and subtle rose-pink accents, the Pandorus sphinx relies on intricate leaf-mimicking camouflage to evade day-roosting birds. Caterpillars hatch with a remarkable coiled caudal horn that drops off during later molts, replaced by a smooth, reflective eyespot on the swollen swollen abdominal segment. At dusk, adult moths take flight with rapid, humming wingbeats to hover and unspool exceptionally long proboscises into tubular blossoms.
