Wax Apple

Syzygium samarangense

Also known as Java Apple, Semarang Rose-Apple, Wax Jambu

Wax apple forms a spreading evergreen canopy characterized by opposite, elliptic leaves and clusters of showy white or pale yellow blossoms with dozens of prominent stamens. The distinctive bell-shaped fruits mature in drooping clusters beneath the foliage, transitioning from pale green to white, pink, or deep red with a characteristic translucent, waxy skin. In native rainforest environments, the flowers provide abundant nectar to bats and insects while the abundant fruit clusters feed frugivorous birds and forest mammals.

Why interaction risk is low
Wild fruits have toxic look-alikes; never eat based on app identification alone.
Responsible observation
  • Observing Blooms: Look closely at branch junctions beneath the upper leaf canopy for hidden flowering clusters.
  • Wildlife Watching: Watch ripe fruiting trees around dusk for visiting fruit bats and early-morning fruit pigeons.
