Satin Pothos
Scindapsus pictusAlso known as Silver Pothos, Silver Vine, Silk Pothos
Satin pothos is an evergreen climbing vine celebrated for its heart-shaped, matte green foliage adorned with distinctive silvery, reflective splashes. In native rainforest understories, juvenile stems creep along the damp forest floor until encountering a tree trunk, where adventitious aerial roots anchor them as they climb toward the dappled canopy. Mature climbing specimens undergo dramatic transformations, producing leaves several times larger than the familiar trailing forms seen in indoor cultivation.

Interaction riskHigh

- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is high
- Contains insoluble calcium oxalates; toxic to dogs and cats if chewed or ingested.
- Why it is dangerous
- Plant tissues contain needle-like insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that pierce soft oral mucosa, causing acute pain, swelling, drooling, and difficulty swallowing.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Recognize the heart-shaped, asymmetrical matte leaves with distinctive scattered silvery-gray blotches and a soft, velvety texture.
- What to do
- Keep out of reach of curious cats and dogs, and wash hands after pruning to prevent accidental transfer to the mouth or eyes.
Responsible observation
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light to maintain the vibrant silver variegation without scorching leaves.
- Watering: Allow the top few centimeters of potting mix to dry out before watering thoroughly to prevent root rot.
- Support: Offer a moss pole or wooden trellis to encourage larger, mature leaf development.
