Asiatic Dayflower

Commelina communis

Also known as Common Dayflower, Dew Herb, Duckfoot Herb, Asiatic Commelina

Asiatic dayflower creeps along damp ground, forming spreading mats of smooth, lance-shaped leaves with clasping sheath bases. Each short-lived blossom opens at dawn featuring two brilliant sky-blue upper petals above a tiny, translucent white lower petal, wilting into a gelatinous mass by afternoon. Highly adaptable to garden beds and disturbed soils, it spreads efficiently both by self-pollination and by rooting from stem nodes that touch moist earth.

Responsible observation
  • Best Viewing Time: Look early in the morning, as the delicate blue flowers close and dissolve by midday.
  • Garden Management: Pull creeping stems completely to prevent node roots from re-establishing in damp soil.
  • Identifying Feature: Look for two bright blue top petals accompanied by a much smaller white bottom petal tucked in a spathe.
