Andropogon virginicus

Andropogon virginicus

Also known as Broomsedge, Yellowsedge Bluestem, Whiskey Grass, Virginia Bluestem

Broomsedge bluestem is a hardy warm-season perennial grass that thrives in nutrient-depleted, acidic soils where other plants struggle. In autumn and winter, its upright culms turn a conspicuous glowing copper-orange, providing vital cover and seeds for ground-nesting birds when surrounding vegetation dies back. The plant produces allelopathic chemicals that leach into the soil, inhibiting the germination of competing seedlings and allowing dense stands to persist for years.
