Silvery bryum forms dense, low cushions that thrive in harsh environments, from the crevices of inner-city sidewalks to the windswept soils of Antarctica. Its distinctive frosted appearance comes from chlorophyll-free, translucent leaf tips that reflect intense solar and ultraviolet radiation while retaining crucial moisture. Extremely tolerant of pollution and trampling, it reproduces prolifically through both windblown spores and easily detached bulbils that take root in minute patches of dirt.
