Christmas ferns grow in fountain-like clumps across eastern North American woodlands, maintaining deep green foliage long after deciduous trees shed their leaves. Each pinna features a distinct thumb-like lobe at its base, resembling a tiny Christmas stocking. In spring, silvery-scaled fiddleheads uncoil to replace the flattened fronds from the previous year.
