Yellow Parasol Mushroom

Leucocoprinus birnbaumii

Also known as Flowerpot Parasol, Flower Pot Parasol, Plantpot Dapperling

Bright yellow and delicate, yellow parasol mushrooms frequently erupt in indoor flowerpots and greenhouses after warm waterings. These saprotrophic fungi break down organic matter in potting soil, releasing nutrients that benefit surrounding plant roots without causing harm to the vegetation. Their tiny umbrella-like caps open rapidly and collapse within a few days, leaving behind fine yellow spores.

Why interaction risk is high
Toxic if ingested; many fungi have dangerous look-alikes, so never eat wild or potted mushrooms.
Why it is dangerous
Contains gastrointestinal irritants that cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting if consumed.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Recognized by its bright canary-yellow color, powdery cap surface, pleated cap margins, and small stem ring.
What to do
Safe to view and handle, but keep potted plants out of reach of small children and pets.
Responsible observation
  • Observe soil health: Their presence indicates rich organic soil with good moisture, benefiting your potted plants.
  • Spore collection: Place a fresh cap on white paper overnight under a cup to observe a fine pale spore print.
