Siberian Rubythroat

Luscinia calliope

Also known as Rubythroat, Siberian Ruby-throat

Male Siberian rubythroats feature a glowing ruby-red throat patch bordered by black and white, while females display a subtle buffy chin. Nesting across the vast taiga forests of northern Asia, these secretive insectivores forage on the ground, flitting through dense undergrowth while flicking their tails. During the breeding season, males produce a loud, remarkably complex song composed of rich musical trills and clever mimicry.

  • Keep a distance: Use binoculars or a scope to avoid flushing these timid birds into deep brush.
