Common Nightingale

Luscinia megarhynchos

Also known as Rufous Nightingale

Common Nightingales are plain warm-brown songbirds with reddish tails and pale underparts. They remain deep in dense cover, where a powerful sequence of whistles, trills, and repeated phrases carries well beyond the singer.

Responsible observation
  • Listen: Long rich phrases separated by pauses are more useful than plumage for detection.
  • Watch: Wait quietly at a thicket edge rather than pursuing a concealed singer.
