Tomtits are small, compact forest flycatchers that perch motionless on vertical trunks before darting down to snatch prey from ground litter. Males vigorously defend permanent territories throughout the year, delivering a brisk, high-pitched warble from high within the canopy to signal ownership. Inquisitive by nature, they often flit down to examine passing hikers, capitalizing on insects disturbed by footsteps along forest tracks.
