Red-footed boobies glide effortless miles over tropical oceans, riding air currents on long, slender wings while scanning the surface for marine life. Unlike their ground-nesting relatives, these nimble seabirds build stick nests high in coastal trees and shrubs, gripping branches securely with bright red webbed feet. They snatch flying fish right out of the air or make rapid shallow plunges, returning to loud, dense island breeding colonies at dusk.
