Whooping Crane

Standing as North America's tallest bird, the whooping crane pairs brilliant white plumage with a crimson crown patch and striking black wingtips visible during flight. Mated pairs reinforce lifelong bonds through resonant bugling unison calls and elaborate leaping dances across remote northern wetlands. Each autumn, the primary wild flock embarks on a 2,500-mile journey from Canada's Wood Buffalo region to winter along the Texas Gulf Coast.
