Pygmy Rattlesnake

Sistrurus miliarius

Also known as Ground Rattlesnake, Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, Southeastern Pygmy Rattlesnake, Little Rattlesnake

Pygmy rattlesnakes are small, stout pit vipers named for their tiny rattle that produces a faint buzz resembling an insect. They actively forage along leaf litter and forest edges, using cryptic coloration to ambush lizards, frogs, and small rodents. Females give birth to live young in late summer, with newborns possessing bright yellow-tipped tails used to lure prey.

Why interaction risk is very high
Bites deliver cytotoxic venom causing intense pain; observe from at least two meters away.
Why it is dangerous
Venom is cytotoxic, causing rapid swelling, severe tissue pain, and potential localized necrosis.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a thick body with grey, pinkish, or orange tones, dark spots, and a slender tail tipped with a tiny rattle.
What to do
Freeze immediately if spotted nearby and back away slowly; never reach into blind patches of leaf litter.
Responsible observation
  • Watch Your Step: Scan leaf litter and fallen logs carefully when walking through southern pine forests.
  • Listen Closely: Listen for a faint insect-like buzz, which indicates a defensive pygmy rattle nearby.
  • Wear Boots: Stick to clear paths and wear sturdy high-top boots when hiking off-trail.
