Indian Star Tortoise

Geochelone elegans

Also known as Star Tortoise

Indian star tortoises are renowned for the radiating golden-yellow streaks on their high-domed shells, a striking pattern that serves as remarkable disruptive camouflage amidst tall dry grasses and scrub. Mostly solitary herbivores, they spend the cooler dawn and dusk hours grazing on tough vegetation before retreating beneath dense bushes or subterranean burrows to escape scorching midday heat. During the monsoon rains, their activity peaks as they eagerly drink standing water, forage on fresh plant shoots, and initiate breeding displays.

Support conservation
Maintain a respectful distance, leave wild tortoises strictly undisturbed, and report suspected poaching to local wildlife authorities.
Responsible observation
  • Keep Distance: Watch quietly from several paces away so the tortoise does not withdraw into its shell.
  • Do Not Touch: Handling wild tortoises stresses them and may cause them to void vital water reserves.
  • Conceal Location: Never share exact GPS coordinates online, as wild populations face heavy poaching pressure.
