Domestic cattle form complex herd hierarchies governed by social grooming, vocal contact calls, and established age-based leadership. As specialized ruminants, they spend hours each day grazing fibrous grasses before resting to regurgitate and thoroughly chew their cud. Descended from the extinct wild aurochs over ten millennia ago, they now shape pasture ecology and agricultural landscapes across nearly every continent.

- Large body mass poses a trampling and crushing hazard; give pastured herds ample clearance.
- Why it is dangerous
- Massive weight and physical power allow cattle to trample, kick backwards, or butt with horns or heads, causing crushing injuries or bone fractures.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for broad shoulders, thick cloven hooves, and sometimes pointed horns, often accompanied by watchful, wide-set eyes and nervous snorting.
- What to do
- Do not enter pastures on foot; if cattle approach, remain calm, face them without running, and exit the enclosure calmly.
Responsible observation
- Give Space: Stay outside fenced enclosures and maintain wide margins around grazing herds.
- Watch Body Language: Retreat slowly if an animal lowers its head, pawing the ground, or snorts.
- Respect Mothers: Never walk between a cow and her calf, as maternal defense can be sudden.
