Geladas spend up to ninety percent of their waking hours sitting upright on plateaus, plucking grass blades with dexterous fingers and shuffling forward without standing. Highly social, they gather in multi-tiered fission-fusion bands that occasionally swell into grazing herds of several hundred individuals, chattering constantly through expressive lip-flips and complex acoustic vocalizations. At dusk, troops navigate sheer cliff faces in the Ethiopian Highlands to sleep out of reach of nocturnal ground predators.
