Dusky Leaf Monkey
Trachypithecus obscurusAlso known as Spectacled Langur, Spectacled Leaf Monkey
Dusky leaf monkeys move with remarkable agility through the high canopy, using their long tails for balance while leaping between tree crowns. Infants are born bright orange, a striking coloration that triggers strong protective instincts among all group members until their coats darken around six months of age. Specialized multi-chambered stomachs allow these primates to ferment and break down tough, fibrous leaves that other animals cannot digest.

- Very high
- Why interaction risk is low
- Capable of a defensive bite or scratch if cornered; keep a respectful distance.
- What to notice
- Recognized by distinctive white rings surrounding dark eyes, pale mouth patches, and dark grey body fur.
- Support conservation
- Keep a quiet distance of at least ten meters to prevent causing stress to foraging troops.
Responsible observation
- Canopy Spotting: Scan high tree crowns during early morning and late afternoon when troops forage actively.
- Recognize Vocalizations: Listen for loud honking alarm calls that signal threats or group movement through the trees.
- Avoid Feeding: Never offer food, as habituated monkeys are prone to road collisions and aggressive behavior.
