Goldentail Moray

Gymnothorax miliaris

Also known as Bastard Eel, Conger Moray

Goldentail morays tuck their slender bodies into coral crevices throughout western Atlantic reefs, rhythmically opening and closing their mouths to pump oxygenated water across their gills. While often perceived as an aggressive threat display, this gaping breath posture allows them to survey passing prey with excellent olfaction before striking. Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, they venture out onto open sand and rubble flats at dusk to hunt small benthic crustaceans and sleeping reef fish.

  4. Very high
Why interaction risk is low
Sharp teeth can deliver painful, infection-prone bites if cornered; observe from a respectful distance.
Why it is dangerous
Recurved teeth and oral bacteria cause deep puncture lacerations that carry a high risk of stubborn secondary infections.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a slender mottled body ending in a distinctly bright yellow or golden tail tip.
What to do
Never thrust bare hands into reef hollows and back away slowly if an eel lunges or coils tightly.
Responsible observation
  • Crevice awareness: Keep fingers and hands away from dark holes and coral overhangs where eels rest.
  • Night diving: Angle dive torches indirectly to avoid blinding eels hunting out in the open.
