Amur Carp
Cyprinus rubrofuscusAlso known as South China Carp, Asian Common Carp
Amur carp actively root through benthic sediment, using sensitive chin barbels to locate hidden invertebrates, seeds, and plant material in murky waters. Native to rivers and lakes across eastern Asia, this hardy fish is the direct wild ancestor of domesticated ornamental koi. Females deposit hundreds of thousands of sticky eggs onto submerged vegetation during spring spawning runs.
