Malabar Danio

Devario malabaricus

Also known as Giant Danio

Malabar danios are energetic, schooling freshwater fish that cruise the upper and middle layers of fast-flowing hill streams. Their iridescent flanks shimmer with brilliant horizontal blue and gold stripes that fracture sunlight penetrating forest canopies. During spawning, pairs scatter adhesive eggs among submerged vegetation in shallow riffles, providing no parental care once fertilization is complete.

Responsible observation
  • Observation: Approach stream banks softly, as shadow movements cause the entire school to dart into deeper crevices.
  • Aquarium Keeping: Provide a tight-fitting lid on enclosures because these powerful swimmers readily jump.
