Pacific banana slugs glide across moist forest floors of the Pacific Northwest, acting as vital decomposers that break down fallen vegetation and disperse seeds and fungal spores. Glowing in shades of bright yellow, green, or spotted brown, these massive terrestrial mollusks secrete a specialized mucus that deters predators and aids locomotion. During dry spells, they bury themselves in leaf litter and coat themselves in a protective mucous layer to retain moisture.
