Eastern oysters are tireless ecosystem engineers that construct massive, complex reef structures in shallow estuaries and bays. A single adult can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, dramatically improving local water clarity and quality. These living reefs provide critical nursery habitat for hundreds of marine species, from tiny crabs to economically vital sport fish.
