Utah Crab Spider

Bassaniana utahensis

Also known as Utah Bark Crab Spider

Utah crab spiders are masterful ambush hunters with distinctly flattened bodies adapted for sliding beneath tree bark and into narrow crevices. Their mottled grey, brown, and black coloration blends seamlessly against lichen-encrusted trunks where they wait motionless with their enlarged front legs spread wide. Instead of constructing capture webs, they rely on patience and explosive grasping speed to seize unsuspecting insects traversing the wood.

Responsible observation
  • Spotting: Scan furrowed bark on mature pine or oak trunks, watching for subtle leg movements.
  • Observation: Use a magnifying hand lens and natural lighting to examine their intricate camouflage.
  • Handling: Avoid displacing them from their tree, as their delicate limbs are easily damaged.
