North American Wheel Bug

Arilus cristatus

Also known as Wheel Bug, Cog-wheel Bug

Wheel bugs are formidable predators easily recognized by the cog-like, half-gear crest standing atop their thorax. Armed with a stout, curved beak, adults stalk foliage in gardens and tree groves, preying heavily on garden pests like caterpillars, stink bugs, and beetles. Though beneficial to gardeners, they defend themselves fiercely with a bite that is notoriously far more painful than a hornet sting.

Why interaction risk is very high
Delivers an extremely painful bite if handled; observe from a safe distance without touching.
Why it is dangerous
Injects digestive enzymes and paralytic saliva through a sharp beak, causing severe, localized pain that can linger for days.
How to recognize a risky encounter
Look for a large grey insect with a distinct raised, saw-toothed gear or wheel crest on its thorax.
What to do
Never handle with bare hands; use a wide container or cup if relocation is necessary.
Responsible observation
  • Look Closely: Examine high shrubs, goldenrod, and tree bark during warm sunny days.
  • Maintain Distance: Enjoy watching their hunting behavior without attempting to pick them up.
  • Garden Friend: Leave wheel bugs undisturbed in flowerbeds to help control pest insect populations.
