Wheel bugs are formidable predators easily recognized by the cog-like, half-gear crest standing atop their thorax. Armed with a stout, curved beak, adults stalk foliage in gardens and tree groves, preying heavily on garden pests like caterpillars, stink bugs, and beetles. Though beneficial to gardeners, they defend themselves fiercely with a bite that is notoriously far more painful than a hornet sting.
