Southern Paper Wasp
Polistes bellicosusAlso known as Bellicose Paper Wasp
Southern paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped paper nests attached to twigs, eaves, and low vegetation across coastal regions. Queens initiate colonies in early spring, working alongside emerging workers to hunt caterpillars and collect floral nectar. Because their nests are frequently raided by birds and ants, colonies often abandon damaged structures and rebuild completely multiple times in a single season.

Interaction riskVery high
- Low
- Moderate
- High
- Very high
- Why interaction risk is very high
- Females possess painful defensive stings; give active paper nests a wide berth to avoid provoking a swarm.
- Why it is dangerous
- Females deliver venomous, painful stings capable of triggering severe systemic allergic reactions in sensitized individuals.
- How to recognize a risky encounter
- Look for a slender reddish-brown paper wasp with fine yellow stripes and amber-tinted wings on paper comb nests.
- What to do
- Do not swat at wasps or disturb nests; step back slowly if guard wasps begin hovering or buzz-checking nearby.
Responsible observation
- Observation Distance: Keep at least two to three meters back from active nests to avoid triggering a swarm reaction.
- Pest Control Benefits: Allow nests in non-traffic areas to remain, as foraging workers naturally consume garden pests.
- Calm Demeanor: Move smoothly and calmly if a foraging worker approaches, as paper wasps rarely sting away from nests.
