Insect
Blue Ghost
Phausis reticulataAlso known as Blue Ghost Firefly
Blue ghosts are renowned for their eerie, continuous bioluminescent glow, which hovers inches above the forest floor rather than flashing in rhythmic pulses like typical lightning bugs. Winged males cruise low through dark woodland understories in late spring, searching for flightless, larviform females glowing quietly from the damp leaf litter. Their delicate displays are highly synchronized to the onset of complete darkness and cease abruptly after about an hour each night.

- What to notice
- Watch for faint, steady, bluish-white or cool greenish lights hovering silently 30 to 60 centimeters above dark forest floors in late spring.
- Support conservation
- Remain on established trails, never collect specimens, and keep white lights and phone screens fully turned off.
Responsible observation
- Night Lighting: Use only dim red flashlights and keep them pointed at the ground to avoid disrupting mating displays.
- Trail Etiquette: Stay strictly on designated pathways to avoid crushing flightless females hiding in leaf litter.
- Timing: Look for their ghostly blue-green glow during late spring, beginning about 30 minutes after dusk.
