Rough buttonweed thrives in full sun and dry, sandy soils where few other plants can take root. Its wiry, bristly stems bear opposite pairs of narrow leaves and produce tiny, four-lobed pinkish-white flowers tucked directly into the leaf axils. As a low-growing annual, it quickly colonizes disturbed roadsides, dunes, and fallow fields, dispersing small two-seeded button-like fruits by late autumn.
