Pinzón Island Giant Tortoise

Chelonoidis duncanensis

Also known as Pinzón Giant Tortoise, Duncan Island Giant Tortoise

These tortoises feature a classic saddleback carapace with an elevated front margin, an adaptation that allows their long necks to reach high arid vegetation on their dry volcanic home. For more than a century, non-native black rats preyed on every wild-laid egg and hatchling, leaving an aging population unable to reproduce until captive head-start programs and a 2012 rat eradication restored natural nesting. Today, young tortoises once again hatch and thrive across Pinzón's rugged lava plains, cementing one of island conservation's greatest recovery successes.

Support conservation
Keep at least two meters away, remain on guided paths, and never attempt to touch, feed, or corner these slow-moving animals.
Responsible observation
  • Distance: Maintain a legal minimum distance of two meters at all times.
  • Footwear: Stay strictly on designated trails to avoid crushing concealed burrows or juvenile tortoises.
  • Patience: Observe quietly without blocking their walking paths or feeding access.
